HANDOUT FOR JULY 12 2015

Seven Strategies to Overcome Anger

  1. Recognize that anger may easily lead to other sins.

  •

A man of wrath stirs up strife, and one given to anger causes much transgression.

  1. Keep a sort account of your anger.

      Ephesians 4:26-27.

Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.

  1. Cultivate humility. Most of us think too highly of ourselves and this causes us many problems.

Psalm 73:6

Therefore pride is their necklace;

“He that magnifies himself magnifies his provocations.”

  1. Take heed of covetousness. By desiring certain things and then having those things denied us, our imagined loss inflames our passion.

  1. Stop your anger at its beginning. Watch against the first stirrings of your anger, recognize it, and call upon the Lord. “A spark is sooner quenched than a flame. A serpent is more easily crushed as a hatchling than an adult.” (Richard Baxter)

  1. If you cannot quiet your anger then leave. Retreat to a solitary place (a natural environment is best) and calm your soul; pray to the Lord.

  1. Refuse to be a fool. Memorize Ecc. 7:9.

Be not quick in your spirit to become angry,

for anger lodges in the heart1 of fools.
