Living to Please God an Admonishment of Gossip

(A problem then and a problem now)

                                                                       by Dave Thompson

1 Thessalonians 4:9-12

  1. The church was known for their love
  2. But they could love more
  1. Lead a quiet life
  2. Mind your own business (Don’t gossip)
  3. Work with your hands
  1. Result:  Win the respect of outsiders and gain independence from others

Why do we gossip?  Let’s go back about 3000 years to King Solomon.

Proverbs 18:8

Gossip is tasty (choice morsels).  It appeals to the natural man.  Like good food feeds the body, gossip feed mans need to feel better than others.

Proverbs 11:13

What are the results of gossip?  Confidence is betrayed.  When we indulge in gossip we tell others that we cannot be trusted.  Question, can New Salem be trusted to keep a confidence?  I believe for the most part yes.  However it has not always been so.

An old saying I have heard is “ If you want information to get out you can use the telephone, the telegraph or you can tell a gossip.”  Now we have more avenues for gossip with Facebook and Twitter.

Proverbs 16:28

Gossip stirs up dissention in the church.  It can destroy friendships.  Another old saying “ loose lips sink ships”.  Churches and ministries can and have been destroyed by gossip.  New Salem has seen this happen on more than one occasion.

What happens when we refuse to gossip?  Quarrels have no fuel, they ultimately have to die down because no one is there stoking the fire with the fuel of gossip.  Mathew 18 discipline can work because there is no outside interference.

2000 years ago the Apostle Paul wrote the church of Corinth a letter.

2 Corinthians 12:20

Paul was afraid of what he might find when he visited the church.  He feared that there would be quarreling, jealousy, anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder.  One could easily put gossip at the head of the list because it can be the root cause of all the others.

Gossip does not just affect the church.  It can take the form of bullying as we have seen in our schools.  Children are killing themselves because they are being bullied by gossip.

We cannot stop all gossip, but we the children of God can make a difference if we are willing to stop our gossiping.  When the church is considered a safe place and that it is not like the rest of the world more people will come to know our Jesus as Lord and Savior.

I leave you with one last thought.  If you have a problem with gossip, whether you like to repeat it or you like to hear it you are engaging in sin.  Jesus is telling you today to “go and sin no more”.
